The San Antón Celebration: A Story of Tradition and Solidarity

In La Alberca, a village with centuries of history, the San Antón Celebration is much more than a festivity—it is a living testament to our identity, a tradition that connects generations, and a reminder of the solidarity that defines our community. Every January, this event brings together locals and visitors to honor one of the region’s most deeply rooted traditions, which has endured over time thanks to the dedication of many, including the FERMIN family.

The Origins of a Unique Tradition

The Origins of a Unique Tradition

The Iberico pig has been an essential part of La Alberca’s history, and that of the Iberian Peninsula, for over 3,000 years. It is said that the Phoenicians introduced this animal to the region around 1100 B.C., and during the Roman Empire, its breeding and use became firmly established. Over the centuries, the pig became a symbol of survival and prosperity, with its meat becoming a staple in the local diet.

In La Alberca, the tradition of the Marrano de San Antón was born out of an act of generosity. Centuries ago, the town began raising a pig collectively, with a clear purpose: to help the most disadvantaged family of the year. For months, the animal roamed freely through the streets, cared for and fed by the townspeople, until it was eventually donated to those in need. This practice, in addition to being an example of generosity, reinforced the sense of community and unity among the people of La Alberca.

However, over time and with changing social dynamics, the custom fell into disuse, and for decades, the Marrano de San Antón disappeared from the town’s streets.

The Revival of the Tradition

Fortunately, in the 1980s, a group of locals decided to restore this tradition and bring back its original meaning. Among them was Fermín Martín, founder of FERMIN, who played a key role in its revival. Thanks to his efforts and those of other townspeople, the Marrano de San Antón once again became an essential part of La Alberca’s cultural identity, attracting interest from residents, tourists, and the media.

Since then, every June 13, on the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua, the ceremony of blessing the pig takes place at the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, marking the start of its journey through La Alberca. For months, residents feed and protect it, ensuring that it is well cared for until January 17, the feast day of Saint Anthony Abbot.

Today, this tradition remains alive thanks to the dedication of Santiago and Paqui Martín, who continue the FERMIN family’s commitment to the Marrano de San Antón. As every year, FERMIN donates the iconic pig, “Antón,” which has become the symbol of the celebration. This 2025, the FERMIN family also has the honor of taking on the role of Patrons of the celebration.

“The pig has always been a symbol of solidarity in La Alberca, and it is truly special to see the entire community come together around it.”Santiago Martín, co-owner of FERMIN.

This year’s festivities will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2025, culminating in the raffle of Antón. The funds raised will benefit the Asociación ALCER, an organization dedicated to supporting kidney patients. Although the recipient changes each year, the spirit of solidarity remains at the heart of this event.

The day begins with a Mass in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot, followed by music, dancing, and the enjoyment of Iberico products. This blend of tradition, culture, and gastronomy has made the celebration a landmark event, attracting visitors from all over the world who seek to experience the authenticity of La Alberca.

For FERMIN, being part of this event is not just an honor—it is a commitment to history, community, and the values that have defined our family for generations. Together, we celebrate the essence of La Alberca and its lasting legacy of generosity and care.
